Below are two tools that can be helpful for making decisions about writing assignments for (multilingual) students in your (BC) high school classroom. One considers the notion of register, which accounts for how language varies from one situation to the next, and the other genre, the kind of text a given purpose produces.
Choose the topic, role relationship, and mode of a writing task along continua that show what sorts of texts certain combinations can produce.
Complete the sentence “I want my students to…” and the tool shows the genre that a given task produces, as well as its schematic structure, an annotated model, a review of language features, and a sample curricular sequence for the Teaching and Learning Cycle.
What each tool is for, where the genres come from, what to do with a model text, three questions to ask a class before students draft, and what the tools do not cover.
